This article will cover the most important things you should believe in as a Muslim Which are the pillars of Iman. You can find explanations for each of them and what you should know about them.

First of all, Iman is the Arabic word for faith. Which we can read in the hadiths of the messenger peace be upon him. In one of these Hadiths, Jabreal (the messenger angel) came to the prophet to ask him three questions about Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. These three concepts were defined by the prophet Salla Allah Alihi Wasalam in a concise answer.

1-The Pillars of Iman (faith)

The answer of the prophet to the question of Iman was in this portion of the Hadith:

It was narrated from ’Umar that Jibreel عليه السلام said to the Prophet ﷺ:What is faith (eeman)? He said: “To believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, both good and bad,” Jibreel said to him: You have spoken the truth. He said: We were amazed that he asked him and then confirmed his answers as being correct. The Prophet ﷺ said: “That was Jībreel, who came to teach you your religion.

So, six things are mainly required to have faith (Iman) in or to believe in:

1. Allah2. His Angels3. His Books4. His Messengers5. The Day of Judgement6. Divine Destiny-in the truth that everything good or bad comes from Allah

1. Allah

Your belief in Allah is called Tawheed (the belief in the oneness of Allah).

2. His Angels.

The existence of unseen angels.

3. His Books

The scripture that Allah revealed to prophets. Like, the Quran, Injeel.. etc.

4. His Messengers

The prophets who were sent to inform their nations of Tawheed.

5. The Day of Judgement

The day of reckoning. On that day Allah will judge everyone to go to Jannah or Jahannam.

6. Divine Destiny-in the truth that everything good or bad comes from Allah

Allah knows what has been and what will be.

He keeps all that He decrees in a Clear Book or Al-Lauh-Al-Mahfuz,

as the Qur’an says: “We know that which the earth takes of them (their dead bodies), and with Us is a Book preserved (i.e., the Book of Decrees).”

2-Belief in what the holy Quran and Sunnah require Muslims to believe in

Iman (faith) is more than six but those are the main ones in this Hadith.

Iman (Faith) also includes belief in the unseen matters like angels, Jinn, Shaytan, Jannah, and Jahannam.

Allah says:

{ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلٰوةَ وَممَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ }

Sura 2. verse 3.

The meaning of يؤمنون بالغيب.

Quran is guidance to those (Who believe in the unseen), that which is hidden from them such as Paradise, hell, the Bridge over hell, the Scale, the Resurrection, the Reckoning, etc. It is also said that this means: that they believe in the unseen which is revealed in the Qur’an and also in that which is not revealed therein. It is also said that the unseen is Allah Himself.

Iman also means to do acts of worship and is not limited to faith.

The Prophet said:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Iman has over seventy branches – or over sixty branches – the uppermost of which is the declaration: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’; and the least of which is the removal of harmful object from the road, and modesty is a branch of Iman.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
